Agenda General Assembly 2022 / Agenda Asamblea General 2022 (Español abajo)

Feel free to add your ideas in this pad / No dudes en añadir tus ideas en este pad: https://pad.riseup.net/p/v22IAZT1DTF82L07i1Mt

English:

1. The assembly is asked to approve a contract stating the association the Foundry (i.e. its members) has the right to use the space and the obligation to take care of the costs and maintenance related to that use. This is essentially a free rent contract.

2. The objective for this year is to reach financial sustainability. As roughly calculated in the previous blog post, I think the aim should be to generate 1000e per month. In the future we can make money selling some products, but for now the income is all accommodation fees. I propose the following fee structure:
-Membership stays at 20e per year and is obliged for all guests (see point 1), except those invited for some specific purpose, whose fee can sometimes be waived.

Accommodation fees will take into account the fact that some people share a room or camp in the field:
-Price per person: 5e per day; 25e per week; 100e per month.
-Price per room: 5e per day; 25e per week; 100e per month.
So a person sleeping in a tent pays 100e / month (+ membership fee); a couple sleeping in a room pays 2×100+100 = 300e / month (+ membership fee). Someone visiting for one day effectively pays 30e (including membership fee). We are building some forest cabins for people who require more privacy for their work; in this model, a cabin counts as a room.

For new guests (not including those invited for a specific purpose) the first week is always paid. If someone wants to stay as a volunteer after that, we can figure out what that person can work on during this week. Volunteers are expected to put in about 20 hours per week. Volunteer work includes construction, craft, forestry and gardening; keeping the space organized is still everyone’s responsibility. At least once every two weeks there should be a volunteer assembly in which people talk about what they have been doing and what they will be working on.

There will also be invited residents who stay for free to work on a project that adds something to the Foundry (someone who organizes an event or produces a site-specific artwork, for example). The in-between category (not quite a volunteer, not quite a paying guest) will disappear. Ideally, there would be more paying guests than volunteers; invited guests will be the smallest group.

This proposal is open to change, but whoever proposes something different should make sure that the model we come up with can lead to financial sustainability.

3. We will soon have 15 bedrooms / cabins (mostly doubles). If about half of them are occupied and volunteers do not outnumber paying guests, fees should cover running costs. In the future, I would like to aim a little higher. The Foundry is a non-profit, but if we generate 1500e / month, that means we have 6000e / year to spend on food for volunteers, improvements of the space, solidarity with other projects or programming.

Quite often someone proposes to do a concert at the Foundry, but people need their expenses covered. Until now, there was no budget for that, but if we can spend a few thousand a year on events it would make the space much more interesting for everyone and dynamize the region. At the moment, most events that happen are proposed by someone from the networks of the Foundry. With a small budget, we could start actively programming things. I imagine this is something to discuss at greater depth at the 2023 general assembly, if the place pays for itself by then.

4. Perhaps we can agree that if prices are reasonable, we try to source products locally instead of buying them at Gadis. We should also grow more stuff ourselves.

5. The Foundry has to be a safe space for everyone, but it’s also a house that’s open to everyone, so sometimes this is tricky. I think we should have contact persons people can reach out to in case there is an uncomfortable situation. This should be a man and a woman. Ideally but not necessarily someone on site.

6. One constant difficulty in a project like the Foundry (a project that works with volunteers that come and go) is the problem of continuity. It’s hard to run a garden without someone who feels responsible for it for an entire season. It’s hard to organize construction without someone who knows what needs to be done and how to do it. My sense is we should try to attract people that are willing to take responsibility for a longer period of time (say half a year), perhaps by finding a way to pay for their food expenses. If that doesn’t work, we need to find ways to guarantee continuity without them.

7. This year, we could use:
Someone with agroforestry skills to plan and plant the 2 hectares of forest that recently became part of the Foundry.
Someone with engineer skills to make a turbine that generates electricity with the river.
Someone with carpentry skills to help making forest cabins and the theater floor.

8. Events planned for this year:
15-17.7. Burn the Foundry. Pavel will organize a metal workshop around this festival.
Later in July: The Animals We Live With (reading group).
Any other ideas?

9. Anyone else has anything to ask or add?

Español:

8. Eventos previstos para este año:
15-17.7. Burn the Foundry.
A finales de julio: The Animals We Live With (grupo de lectura).
¿Alguna otra idea?
